I read this book when a kid, and it was such a wonderful introduction to mathematics, that led me to become a mathematician!

The title says it all: Playing.
If one has high school algebra behind in life, then this should be an easy and illuminating read. If one lacks any mathematical background but possesses determination and time, this is a better bet for learning about math than most textbooks.
The author advises keeping paper and pencil handy for following up on illustrations and ex[planations. That is where this volume shines: the explanations. In math classes I many times learned HOW to do something, but not the ar The title says it all: Playing.

Prof. Peter leads the reader to the trough; all one needs to do is drink.

PS My copy was published in 1976. It appears Dover has kept the book in print and identical. It was first written in Hungarian and published in 1957. It is "Dedicated to my brother, Dr. Nicolas Politzer, who perished at Colditz in Saxony, 1945."

Started off slow, but still had some insights. Overall a good book.

La prima cosa da sapere su questo libro è che Péter è il cognome di una matematica ungherese del '900, che oltre ai suoi lavori accademici scrisse questo testo di introduzione ai temi matematici che ebbe un grande successo in tutto il mondo, con traduzioni in svariate lingue tra cui per l'appunto l'italiano. Onestamente ho trovato l'approccio seguito un po' pesante per i miei gusti, un po' per la traduzione di un allora giovane Giulio Giorello che seguiva chiaramente lo stile dell'epoca, ma sopr La prima cosa da sapere su questo libro è che Péter è il cognome di una matematica ungherese del '900, che oltre ai suoi lavori accademici scrisse questo testo di introduzione ai temi matematici che ebbe un grande successo in tutto il mondo, con traduzioni in svariate lingue tra cui per l'appunto l'italiano. Onestamente ho trovato l'approccio seguito un po' pesante per i miei gusti, un po' per la traduzione di un allora giovane Giulio Giorello che seguiva chiaramente lo stile dell'epoca, ma soprattutto perché il testo mi ha dato l'idea di sfruttare sempre casi particolari per giungere a una generalizzazione che però non ha un vero fondamento. La cosa si vede molto bene nella parte iniziale, dove si comincia con le operazioni elementari: certo che andando avanti fino ai teoremi di indeterminazione di Gödel e all'induzione transfinita di Gentzen (sì, Péter arriva sin là, cosa che negli anni '50 del secolo scorso non era per nulla scontata) le cose migliorano. Ho qualche dubio sull'approccio che dai disegnini discreti porta allo studio delle curve, ma lì il problema potrebbe essere mio.
Un'ultima nota. Io ho letto la prima edizione italiana del libro, pubblicata da Feltrinelli nel 1973, e nella quale c'erano alcuni errori nel testo (anche stupidi, come scrivere 2/6 e 2/10 anziché 6/2 e 10/2). Per curiosità ho dato un'occhiata alle versione attuale, edita nel 2010 da Rizzoli, e almeno quell'errore è rimasto intatto. This is a introduction to mathematics for non-mathematicians, and therefore only enjoyable to people who don't know math or who really know math. Pretty good overall; the bit on calculus was a bit tedious, but she warned that it might be and advised people to just skip it if they found it to be so. Of course, the bit on logic was highly annoying since she essentially treated constructive logic like a heretic sect of a well established religion.
